Heyyy! The last few weeks i’ve had a new 2023 prius and it’s worked incredibly well. It’s at 700 miles now. The issue is, I live in an insanely hilly area, and I therefore basically can’t follow the break in rules (Sustajned RPM from the hills, etc)
I’m worried this will have a meaningful impact on me later on… is there anything I can even do about this?
I think at least the engine is already broken in at factory
You are fine don’t worry about it
This. The nature of a hybrid is that the revs are almost always changing based on load variance, so it’s fine.
Nah
Just make your first oil change a bit early.
is 5k miles for synthetic good?
for the first change, yeah, then I’d bump back to 7k. They say you can do 10-12k, but oil is cheap, replacement engines are expensive.
Just do the best you can. The break-in period is there to allow the piston rings to seat properly and to allow the metal components in the block to wear In together without creating hot spots in the engine that could lead to uneven wear down the road.
As long as you do the best you can to limit your speed and try to take it easy you’ll be okay.
Do a break-in oil change At about 1,000 miles to get the new engine debris out before it causes damage to the engine. Some people say to do two, at 500 and 1,000 miles, but that’s up to you.
Do you think it would be unwise to do the change at 5k? I plan on doing it every 5k synthetically, and i’d do it at 1k too but my parents would find it unnecessary haha
https://youtu.be/_6nWCQ_70J0?si=UpVg3-SEmaGnfjKF Watch this video. A lot of people think break ins aren’t necessary and oil changes at 10k are okay because one guy has done it that way. If you sell your car after 100k miles it doesn’t really matter though
do you think i’m in good shape if i change oil at 5k miles
Nice video. I like the way he breaks down the additive info and why it’s important. Thanks for sharing it.
Just follow the recommended service intervals in the manual. Toyota has been doing 10k OCIs for almost 15 years now and there is tons of data out there (black stone labs, etc) showing that the oil is just fine on those intervals.
