I have a 2004 Tacoma with 177k miles that I’ve owned for a few years and would like to own until it’s absolutely done in this world. The transmission fluid is dark/approaching black but seems to be pretty clean and does not smell burnt. I cannot recall the condition of the fluid when I bought it. I am unsure if the fluid has ever been changed but suspect it has based on the fluid condition.

I’m getting mixed advice on whether or not to do a drain and fill (everyone seems to agree that a flush is out of the question.) I’m hoping I can get a consensus here.

Drain and fill/pan drop to replace filter. It sounds like it’s been serviced before, and if you’re not having any shift flare or slipping, send it
