I just blew the motor in my Acura (my fault) and my brother has this 05 lx that he got from a customer so no maintenance history. I bought it cuz the price was right and he needs the $.

Cars has 150k miles. Timing belt was done at 130k. It’s an automatic and I have some DW-1 that I will put into it. Shifts good, runs good. My main concern is head gaskets and transmission. From my 5mins of googling seems like there’s been some issues with this gen. Customer gave the car away cuz he thought the head gasket was blown but my brother(real mechanic) has thoroughly checked and doesn’t think there is anything wrong. I don’t smell any hydrocarbons in the expansion tank and we dropped the oil and everything looks perfectly fine so idk why the customer thinks this.

Anyone with experience with these? Have you seen a lot of transmission failure or blown head gaskets?

My questions are why did the customer think the head gasket was blown and why does your brother say there’s nothing wrong with it? Did your brother fix anything or just check what the guy said? Was it overheating? The oil won’t necessarily tell you if the head gasket is blown. A blown gasket would caused by something so it’s curious that the customer thought this while your brother thinks nothing is wrong.
