I now am able to get fiber Internet where I live (Fidium). I’m guessing I’ll want my own router instead of using what they give me.
Interests:
- 1GB symmetrical speeds
- Ability to block AD serving domains
- Smooth online gaming as needed
- Secure
Not up to speed on the newest technology or which router companies are best to buy from. House is single story about 1300sqft.
In the past I had a TP-Link Archer AC1750 but wished it had more advanced features.
Any recommendations or thoughts?
You want 3 features, and then you can decide which product(s) satisfy them:
-
A router
-
A wireless access point (often included with the router for consumer stuff)
-
A DNS server that can block ads.
A good cheap set of options that would set you up to play and grow would be:
-
UBNT ERX for $60: https://store.ui.com/us/en/products/er-x
-
A UBNT Wifi 6 lite AP $100 https://store.ui.com/us/en/products/u6-lite
-
A pihole (if you have a Microcenter nearby you can grab a Pi 3 for like $25, if you want a case it’s probably $10 more).
You can run the pi-hole software on a lot of other things too https://docs.pi-hole.net/main/prerequisites/.
I dunno if the ERX supports this but on the dream machine pro there’s a setting for adblocking so a pi hole may not be needed if it is built in.

Might want to take a look at pi-hole, requires a spare computer though. You will need a router though.
Do you have any PCs on-line 24/7 at a static IP on your LAN, such as a media server or NAS? If so, you can run AdGuard Home, to provide the adblocking you’re looking for. It can act as the DNS server for your entire network.
Cheapest option for just the blocking is as previously recommended. Get a Raspberry Pi and install Adguard on it (I just personally prefer it to pihole. The UI is cleaner and I find it easier to configure.) Then use a consumer router.
Best option I found and use is get that AliExpress mini PC (yes it’s safe), get a home license for Untangle UTM, install that. Use the raspberry pi for Adguard (if you already have a NAS, most of them you can install Adguard on and just use that instead of a Pi). Lastly if you go with the mini PC router option you need wifi so go with a Unifi AP or a TP link AP.
I prefer the paid home license for Untangle UTM over pf/open sense only because I’ve found the QoS works much better on it and the UI is just perfect.
