I was driving home from work early hours this morning and my car jolted abit and the check engine light came on, this is my first time running into any issues with my car so I I’m completely oblivious as to how an engine should look, after having a look, I started up again and now it’s gone, is this a normal thing to happen? I’m abit worried because I have to take a 3 hour trip today and I don’t want to be stranded out in the middle of nowhere away from family and friends

A check engine light, or often MIL (malfunction indicator light) Is just that. The engine controls see something outside of parameters. This can be out of normal range or a input actually missing amongst other things. So the problem condition ceased to exist, light goes off. The trouble code will likely be stored as a “history” code and can be retrieved with a scan tool. Hope it’s an easy one for you!

Check Obd2 codes to be on safe side but if check engine light is not on, then it should be fine. There 100 things that can cause a check engine light and most of those does not make the car undrivable, you can still drive with check engine light on, however it has to be repaired as soon as you can. Check engine light.

The least you can do is check the motor oil, transmission oil, and your coolant levels. If the car jolted and flashed the check engine at you your issue is likely somewhere around there. Not too many things will make a car jolt.
