I want a 3 series, especially m340i, but all the ones in my area are rebranded titles or very high mileage or huge seller markups and im now leaning towards b48? Am I missing out a lot? Will I regret my decision? Is it worth the extra 10-15k$?

It’s hardly a let down, sure it may not be as good as a B58, because it is essentially a B58 with 2 cylinders cut off, so it isn’t as powerful.

The B48 is a brilliant engine, very reliable and durable and has been proven to be a good tuning platform in recent times. There was one person who achieved over 450whp on the stock B48 internals (G20 330i), he reckons it can go up to 550-600whp, so it’s easily as strong as an SR20DET, 4G63 or an EA888 in terms of strength.

If you’re chasing some power, yeah, it’s worth it

330i with b48 is a great commuter car with enough power to feel quick but it will never feel very fast

More is not always better, get what suits your actual driving style

Not at all disappointed with the B48 for the daily family X3. It would probably be a little quicker in the 3 series, so I think you’ll be fine. It wasn’t worth the $15k to get an M40i X3 for us and I love torquey cars. Our X3 is plenty quick to shoot gaps in city traffic and combat bay area freeways. That said, it isn’t my performance car.

Yeah, I have both a X3 B48 and 2018 340. Power difference is obviously night and day plus the weigh differential between the 2; however the X3 B48 is more than up to the task.

We tested the X30 M40i but, since it’s my wife’s car, she preferred the 4 banger over the 6.

I went from a b48 to a b58 and the performance increase is massive. If it’s in your price range and you see a good one on the market, I’d definitely recommend the 340.

If you want to experience the b58 if honestly say consider the 540i. When I was in the market they were going for similar prices as 330s. I have one and it’s quite the monster compared to my friend’s 330.

I have a 2016 BMW 340i Xdrive automatic in silver just under 79k. I’m the second owner. It’s been in 1 accident “guy in a truck backed into the front of me going 5 mph 2 years ago lol. Car runs great haven’t put it up for sale but if you interested let me know. Besides minor wear and tear the inside is fucking immaculate. Only thing I’ve ever done to her was get tint. It’s bone stock and I’ve only ever “pushed” the car a few times with family. It’s my daily driver to and from work. It’s garage kept at my house in Harford County Maryland!

I have the B48 in the 135i, it’s rapid in the one series but I’m unsure how that will transfer to a larger car! Probably plenty fast enough for every day driving but if you want that extra punch the B58 would be ideal.

Yea my buddy had a jcw mini with the b48 and that hoe was quick. I’d imagine it’s significantly lighter than a 3 series though

The B48 is a punchy engine. Grunts and torquey down low and super smooth about putting the power down. It’s not overwhelmingly quick but there’s this to chew on…

The B48 330i msport and the B58 340i each have the same 155mph nanny on board.

Can confirm, the 155mph limiter in the B48 works. Power to spare too.

My wife has a g20 330i xdrive and its a fun car. Its faster (obviously) off the line than my modified f22 m235i (n55). I have a dream of swapping a b48 into an e30.

It gets unbelievable mileage and has the power and torque needed to get moving when needed.

That being said, if you have the means of going b58, do it. Buy once cry once.

Look, from what I can tell you should just an m340i it’s sounds like it’s exactly what your looking for. I’m telling you won’t regret getting the m340i over the 330i but the other way around I can’t guarantee you’ll feel the same way. You may have to travel out of state to buy an m340i then drive it home, or just wait until one shows up in your area.

I own a f82 m4 so s55 engine I previously had a g20 330i stage 2 daily drive they are the same car except suspension you won’t even notice now of course if your drag racing and counting times etc it would be a big deal, but my 330i kept up with and would beat 5.0s when I got up to stage 2 power was amazing tons of fun. I always regretted not getting a 340i when I got my 330i for years that’s why I kept doing mods and upping the power, but after getting a m4 I realize it was kind of a grass is always greener on the other side type thing not too much of a difference unless your drag racing or tracking the car. To sum it up buy the m340i if you have money more platform to work on and you won’t spend every day wondering if you should have got a m340i. If money is tighter and a issue then get a 330i. Too me and this is no shot at you but it looks like money is a factor as your looking at rebranded and high Mile cars which I don’t recommend. Also one more question why not get a m4 they are cheaper then a m340i?

If you go with a 330i, stick with RWD and get one with the M-Sport Package. Test one out and put the drive mode and transmission into Sport; you may find that it meets your needs.

    I second the sentiment on looking into a G30 540i if you’re set on a B58.
