I have a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee, just hit 100,000 miles. Pretty much no issues other than a few small cosmetic dings.

Took the car to Carmax tonight to get an appraisal, the online appraisal was $8K. They took it out for a drive and came back and said that the car is having “shift issues” and they think the transmission might be failing. Based on this they dropped the appraisal down to $3.8k.

I asked for an explanation and they said the tester heard a whining from the transmission that went away when they put the car in neutral. I tested this on my ride home and heard no difference. Also looked up some symptoms and my car has none of them, and it actually said the car would be noisier in neutral.

Does Carmax know what they are talking about, or should I take it somewhere else?

I would go somewhere else, if they too say it’s making a noise then have them drive you around in your vehicle and get them to duplicate the noise for you to hear for yourself.

More than likely it has zero issues and carfax wants to save themselves money by inventing a phantom before making you an offer.

They pay you 3.8k instead of 8k, wash and wax, throw it on market for 12k and bank the difference.
