Hey everyone, I’m going to give you some context in what I need advice.

I am a 1st year apprentice at a Volkswagen, I am young only 20 years old, went to school for 1 year for this. How they told us how work would be it sounded pretty cool, we mostly just watched and saw what the other techs did and maybe we get a few jobs here and there but mostly we would get maintenance jobs. Now working at VW for around 6 months… it’s hell, it’s completely different on what they told us.

They have 1 tech that his ONLY job is to look at us, I don’t know how they convince him to do that job. He doesn’t do anything than to double check all of our work, from oil plug to tire bolts, everything. And I feel really frustrated because on top of that, they expect us to be quick, when a car comes in and I have to let’s say, change a light bulb and it takes me longer than 5 minutes to figure out. The service manager comes down and basically says “Why is it taking so long?” I tell her, I’m trying to figure out how to do it. She always responds with “did you tell your teacher?” Like what I need help with is basically asking if this is how 3-4 years of being apprentice is like? I can’t think for myself and I can’t never think because my “teacher” is there for me and we should always go to him if anything goes wrong.

I’m sorry if you guys didn’t understand, I’ve had to talk to the Owner and Service Manager for so many issues so I’m just writing out of frustration.

Starting off at a dealership is tough man. Friends that I know who go to school currently, have a part time job at a small shop. Other friends did the same and then moved to a dealership and they did just fine
