Need to replace my water pump on my 2000 Dodge Ram work van but I’m having a hell of a time getting the fan clutch off.
I’ve tried PB B’laster, heat gun, heat gun + PB B’laster, pulley holders, an air hammer, air hammer + pulley holders, clockwise, counter clockwise… no luck. The replacement water pump has right-handed thread so I’m assuming the old one does as well.
I’m at the point where I might try and take the fan shroud and the water pump off at the same time. Unfortunately, there’s a buried hose and hose clamp on the top of the water pump that’s super hard to get at even with everything removed. It doesn’t help that this is a van and there’s hardly any room to work from above.
Any suggestions/ideas??
Using your air hammer, are you using a fan clutch wrench?
Bought a cheap set from amazon, worked perfect on first hit. Tool broke and needed to be welded, but it did work!
Something like this;
https://www.amazon.com/PTSTEL-Installs-Pneumatic-Removing-Chrysler/dp/B0BCFVNB4P/ref=sr_1_25?crid=Y1RWI2STZQUG&keywords=Fan+Clutch+Wrench&qid=1700096179&s=automotive&sprefix=fan+clutch+wrench+%2Cautomotive%2C362&sr=1-25
Double check the threads, when the engine runs, the fan should want to tighten.
There are some good youtubes on using these wrenches .
