Hi all - I’m looking to buy my first ever electric vehicle soon (not sure which model but probably Tesla/Polestar/BMW) and have a quick question. I’m often gone from home for several weeks (or even months) at a time, and I currently keep a trickle charger on my 2015 Explorer’s 12V battery the whole time (it’s a “smart” CTEK charger that apparently doesn’t screw up the battery). That charger recently broke after many years of use, so I’m wondering whether there’s any need to replace it since I’m going to switch to an EV soon.
I know the answer may differ across EV models, but in general: if I leave the car in a garage for a few weeks it’s plugged into the main EV charger whole time, is there any need to use trickle charger for the 12V battery?
Any quick thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Im just a simple ICE guy, but it sure would make sense to me for manufacturers of EVs to incorporate some manner of 12v float charger into the charging circuit for the big battery.
