My 2010 ford f150 5.4l with 155k started to misfire and shake while idling. I took it to a local shop and they refused to work on it and suggested taking it to the dealership.

The dealership says I need a timing chain job, phasers, and new spark plugs. The job is quoted at $4400 for the timing chain job and phasers, and then $993 for the spark plugs plus an additional hour of labor for each one that breaks. I thought about just replacing the spark plugs only but the technician said if there is a timing issue the spark plugs are likely to break again.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I do not know much about trucks. Thanks

Seriously, for that price have a shop install a jasper motor. Otherwise find another shop. That job should be less than half what they want and your still gonna have timing issues and they’ll just keep selling you parts and you’ll keep paying because you already spent 5k and don’t wanna fell like you wasted it. Ask jasper for a good shop they recommend in your are and talk to that shop for a price.

The 2010s don’t have the 2 piece plugs that break, the 204-2008ish do. I’d find another Independent shop to look at it. Not doubting it’s a phaser/time issue as that is common on those. Have the plugs ever been done? It may just be worn plugs or a bad coil(s). Do you know what codes it’s setting?
