I just wrote a post this morning asking about a gas smell in my car after getting my vapor canister fixed.

Now I believe I might have a bigger issue. In August of this year, I had a cat converter issue in bank One. I took it to my original mechanic but because of our language barrier, I chose just to find a well-known exhaust shop in my area.

They fixed the issue and that was that. In my previous post, I mentioned the gas smell and my check engine light being on. It had only been two days since they fixed the original issue.

I go to my mechanic this morning and he shows me a code of P2089 (bank 2 too lean). He hurried me away and told me to go back to the exhaust shop since I have a warranty with them!

Initially, I could not remember exactly what bank the exhaust shop fixed but we figured it out. They pulled my car on a lift and showed me where the second bank was located. They asked me a few questions that raised my suspicion that my mechanic might have replaced my cat converter with a junkyard version.

They mentioned to me that it was missing a screw and there is no way the screw would be missing without a mechanic touching it. We also noticed there was a number labeled on the side of the bank. (which would possibly align with junkyard parts). My car should still have the factory bank therefore, no number should be labeled on it. I do not believe it was my exhaust mechanic because this issue would have caused my check engine light to come on back in August.

I do not want to go around accusing anyone. I also know when you fix one part another part can break my suspicions are strong. Do you think the mechanic switched out my cat converter?

Also, if you do believe he switched it out how do I go about proving it was him?

Okay, and with your 99% certainty can you explain why he would ask me prior to getting my work done for my vapor canister if my cats were under warranty? (because remember I initially was going to him in August so he knew about it) & again after he runs the codes this morning? I told him yes but I never said I only fixed bank 1 not bank 2.

I’m not saying you are wrong. I’m open to all opinions/comments. I just find it strangeee that he asked such questions and then BAM I have issues.
