I truly don’t understand how in 2023 with all the digitalization we have cars with backup cameras from at best a 2015 mid range smartphone. What’s preventing a manufacturer like bmw for an example from putting a high end sony sensor like the one on the iPhone 15 into their camera modules?

My Dad’s '20 RAV4 does not have the best rearview camera, but it’s still bright, sharp enough to see details (and even read the words on signs or bags or whatever) and works perfectly fine day or night.

a $1 unit meets the minimum legal requirements and is higher resolution than the monitor?

The rearview camera on my family’s 2016 Audi Q5 has the performance of a unit that costs 50 cents, it’s total garbage and barely satisfies the legal requirements. This was before the camera was mandated too, and there are 2016 Q5s without the option, so it was actually sold as a ‘luxury’ feature lol.
