I truly don’t understand how in 2023 with all the digitalization we have cars with backup cameras from at best a 2015 mid range smartphone. What’s preventing a manufacturer like bmw for an example from putting a high end sony sensor like the one on the iPhone 15 into their camera modules?

    1. Cost
    2. Software. The sensor is only part of it.
    3. The existing cameras are good enough. You don’t need 4K/60fps to reverse your car.

I’m still using my mirrors for 80% of the work. Backup camera is just for the initial vector and to clear me of any unsuspecting children in a parking lot

The biggest cost would be the infotainment to be able to display the hd picture. If they were so integrated with the Ecu and key features of the cars these days, they’d be the first thing I rip out and swap with an aftermarket.

What? The infotainment screens already have more than enough resolution for carplay / aa, this is a no factor.

Yeah… Tell that to Nissan. I rented an Altima last week and the camera might have had 10 total pixels and zero contrast. It was almost impossible to use. I get that most cars have subpar rear cameras, but that level of shit is inexcusable.

Also typically when resolution goes up on small cameras like that. Low light performance goes down. It’s why we saw a ton of phones in like 2015 everyone tried out high resolution cameras in phones. Dropped them after a year. And now they are finally coming back as image processing improves.

This. Plus the fact that they procure the cameras almost 2-3 years in advance of the production date. The cameras on a 2023 car are surprisingly good even in low light.
