Back in the day hard drives where composed of physical discs. A bit like those CD things the kids of yore would put in their boombox… shit now I need to explain what a boombox is. You know what it doesn’t matter, don’t worry about that light. If it turns red and you hear grinding noises, just toss the whole thing in the bin.

Now i’ve never truly known, but i’m 88% sure it means that storage is being accessed/hard drive is being used. One use case i can think of is when your laptop is stuck updating for such a long time and that light isnt flashing, you might be able to shut it down without damage to it.
