I don’t know a ton about foreign motors other than surface level stuff like the 2JZ, Wankel, etc. so please forgive my ignorance outside of US motors.
However, in my eyes, it doesn’t get better than the simplicity and easily available power of the SBC, BBC, and 6BT. What are your all time favorites and why?

The entire family Saab B engines were great. I have one in my 900 and it’s efficient and reliable.
Volvo Modular engine - T5 and T6 engines are very fast, reliable, and surprisingly serviceable. A great successor to the redblock
Lastly, my favorite: Honda B16. Mmm good vtec

When I was in highschool, the Honda B-series was so fun. Smiles per dollar were through the roof. You could beat brand new mustang GTs with a $100 eBay turbo in your eg civic coupe shitbox. That gearbox was also so fun to shift too, solid linkage you bang gears as hard as possible without any flex.
BMW M (not motorsport) engine family. Yeah they are not powerful in stock, but they can take a beating or two and you can turbo them anytime.

Australian made Wankel Engines by the Manufacturer “PacPerformance”, they come in all types of aspirations and portings, all billet made perfection. Their quality surpasses Mazdas in lightyears.
The Buso engine, which is a V6 that sounds better than most V8 (definitely better than any BMW & Mercedes farting V8s ever made, realtalk no exaggeration here). Its found in various sporty Alfa Romeos and comes in very different displacements in 2.5 up to 3.8. Naturally Aspirated they sound the most melodically and brutally, especially in high raving examples. Just goggle: “INSANELY LOUD 1996 Alfa Romeo 155 V6 Ti Screaming On Hill Climb” and you will feel what I mean lol.
The Barra Inline six which is an Australian monstrosity of which some specimens have 4L of displacement. It eats everything, especially Holdens and Bugattis. Its found in Australian Fords, especially Ford Falcons.
The naturally aspirated Cossworth 3.9 Litre V12 that revs up to 12K+ RPM, also known as the best sounding V12 of all times. Its found in the Gordon Muray T50 & T33 which cost 5 Million dollars or something. Gordon Muray is the engineer who created the McLaren F1 making the T50 the true evolution of the F1 (sorry McLaren P1, aka quiet hybrid twin turbo shitbox). The GMA T50 weighs less than a ton, has the most insane chassis specs and literally sounds like an Formula 1 V12 car, DESPITE BEING ROAD LEGAL!!!🤯 The Aston Martin Valkyrie, Pagani Huyara don’t come close to it soundal-purity-wise. Its the best sounding road legal car together with the Lexus LFA.
The Lamborghini Murcielago V12, the 2nd best sounding road legal V12 (sorry pagani). It has the bass that the Cossworth V12 lacks. The Murcielago V12 has a deep bass, an high pitched ending of the rev range and a very unique “surge” in its engine sound, that no other generation of V12 Lambo has. The Aventador sound seems very unclean and growly compared to the pure clean, deep and emotional sound of the Murcielago V12.
The cross-plane crankshaft version of the Ferrari/Maserati F136 YC V8 engine found in the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione. Its the best sounding European V8 in my opinion Together with the original flat-crank F136 4.3L V8 found in the 430.
The F136 V8 found in the Ferrari 430 sounds million times better than the V8 in the 458. And straight piped the Ferrari 430 V8 sounds better than an straight piped V12 from an Lamborghini Aventador.
The naturally aspirated Lexus LFA V10 is the best sounding V10 ever created by mankind, and the best sounding road legal sports-car engine together with the 3.9 cossworth V12. It weighs less than a V6 and has a very varying sound depending on how hard you step on the paddle, its like an music instrument or actor, it has multiple sound characters. The induction noises and engine sound change the pitch throughout its power curve in such emotional way you cannot hear in any other engine.
The 2UR-GSE 5.0 in the Lexus LC500 is an beautiful sounding, naturally aspirated V8. Ut sound better than any shitty German V8 that you can buy on the new car market. It sounds very fun and musically, not nearly like the V10 in the LFA but better than any other European V8 that you can buy in 2023 (yes even muuuuuch better than those new, modern & quiet vacuum cleaner Ferrari TT V8s) The 2UR-GSE is an extremely reliable engine and its relatives are known to last for over 1 Million kilometres. Its not too loud like some N/A lambo engines but it has a lot of musical character in its engine note, not any V8 have this gift.
The S85 V10, is an naturally aspirated BMW engine that falls apart all the time. Its the only V10 BMW ever did and will likely ever will do. Its what you buy when you cannot afford an LFA. This V10 is found in the E63/E64 M6 & E60 M5. These gens of M6 & M5 together with the same generation of Z4 (the Z4 dosen’t have the V10) are also design wise my favourite generations of BMW cars, they have a medieval knight armor-like look in their exterior lines & headlights. Their lines also reminds me lightly ancient german calligraphy ornaments which is pretty unique. The German company “AWRON” can make the BMW V10 reliable for you, they also give you a warranty I believe. They install a high quality dry sump, change the pistons, rods, bearings and everything… They essentially swap out everything around the engine block lol. The S85 is loud and high pitched, but sounds very unclean its full of disgusting growls and farts. These unwanted noises can be reduced with the right headers and exhaust system to purify its sound and make it sound more like a formula 1 V10 or Lexus LFA.
4G63T - pretty much bullet proof
I’m not a Chevy guy but the LS motors have to be the best ever
B230FT “Redblock” in RWD Volvos
I think in 10 years we will look back at the BMW B58 very favorably.
