I feel like mastodon at times falls a bit behind on some features, would be cool to see if we can implement native gifs as per
Feature suggestion: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/25742
Threads has implemented a native experience which is superior than copying and pasting a gif using a 3rd party keyboard or having to hunt it down from the web

On that note, we are also missing emoji reactions, feels like we fall behind on the “fun” features
So Threads hasn’t even started federating yet, but they’re already up to the second E in “Embrace, Extend, Extinguish”?
I mean, that’s one way to look at it.
But in the grand scheme of things, can we be angry at them for doing something better than mastodon? Isnt encouraging competition the play we should go for here?
Natively supporting gifs is not something proprietary by meta, or revolutionary by any means. Its included in most social networking/social media platforms outside of fedi and even by some inside fedi
Giphy is owned by shutterstock aparently, and in my github suggestion I had suggested tenor owned by google as I use their API in other projects already
In my opinion, Mastodon has been behind the curve of this long before threads announced support. Hence the feature request I made some time ago lined in the original post above 🤷♂️
For my usage, I’m quite glad Mastodon doesn’t have emojis and gifs natively. I’m here for discourse, and honestly gif reactions add nothing, they’re just noise. gif reactions on Twitter always seem to be used by edgelords or trolls, they generally annoyed me.
I understand others might use them, I’m just saying that these are not some universal need.
Because an gif, much like emoji, are awesome when used as a reaction and can provide a very visual emotion where text can be open to interpretation
With that logic, we shouldn’t have emoji for the same reason 🤷♂️
I mean we do have native emoji support in posts, you just can’t use them as a reaction. I don’t need reaction emojis on posts, this isn’t Linkedin. Either you appreciate my post existing (favourite it) or you don’t, I don’t need to know if you’re ‘sad’ or ‘celebrate’ or ‘heart’. If you’ve got a thought about it then add a reply. Once again, this is just my personal opinion, I realise others differ.
I’ve also got gif on mobile because it’s built into the keyboard, so I don’t need Mastodon to implement it.
I’m just saying ease of use is a big thing, gifs work but are such a hassle to use compared to any other platfor.
someone can reply using a 3rd party keyboard like you said
But from a UX/UI perspective that’s so piss poor compared to every other platform lol
Mastodon should be freedom of choice but that shouldn’t be a hindrance either
Otherwise, other platforms such as threads will implement better features first, be better in general, people will choose that platform, and everyone’s gonna complain about how evil meta overtook activitypub/fedi
I’m just saying 🤷♂️😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨
Yes, I get your points. All I’m saying is that working on ease of use for something that not everybody uses is not high priority. I’d much prefer the Mastodon team, with their limited resources, focus on improving existing features like following hashtags in lists, markdown support, supporting post migration during account migration, stuff like this.
Post migration during account migration would be huge yeah, I get where you’re coming from
Friendica does have GIF support, you can even see it playing in link previews!
