Hey everyone,
This community has been up for 3 weeks, and it’s a small and cozy place. I personally think it’s fine if there isn’t a lot of activity, these consoles are already “retro” after all. People can still write and if you’re subscribed, you’ll see it, so it’s not like posts become invisible.
That said, would you prefer that we have some extra activity here to keep things lively? Such as weekly, bi-weekly or monthly discussions on some particular topic? Or something like a reading club, to check out a particular game? Or some other idea?
Next, should we have a megathread for collections and pickups? I personally think we should, as most communities/subs for specific older consoles tend to only have these kinds of posts, and I’m not a huge fan of that (maybe I’m just jealous).
Next next, should this community be specific to just a) 3DS, b) 3DS+DS, c) all Ninty handhelds (except Switch)?
Originally I intended to have it all here since 3DS is so well compatible with everything that before, but !gameboy@lemmy.world looks pretty lively and is probably a better place for things like GB homebrew or alternative handhelds.
I’d still keep this open to things like the Game&Watch or flip-style emulation handhelds anyway.
Finally, I could use a backup mod or a few. Nothing bad is happening here, so there’s no work for the time being (unless you want to be very active in posting etc.). My intent is to keep the community friendly but also allow a bit of rowdiness, as people can be passionate or have a bad day, so I don’t like being too hasty with bans. Just gotta keep it civil in general. Either way, everyone is 100% nice here, so that’s just theoretical.
Let me know if you’d like to be a mod. At this time I can only take users of lemmy.world to avoid bugs and incompatibilities that stem from federation. We can expand again later as things get smoother.
Anything else, lmk.
Thanks.
This should be a 3DS and DS community
I am gonna be honest even when I own both I use a lot more the older one, and news like this make me excited.
I miss this “tiny subreddits” here since pretty much all my Reddit usage circled around handhelds lol.
That said, would you prefer that we have some extra activity here to keep things lively? Such as weekly or bi-weekly discussions on some particular topic? Or something like a reading club, to check out a particular game? Or some other idea?
Due to the size of this sub I feel like monthly might be a bit better. Some retro game subreddits like /r/sbcgaming and a few others have a monthly game highlight. Maybe this community could do something similar?
Next next, should this community be specific to just a) 3DS, b) 3DS+DS, c) all Ninty handhelds (except Switch)?
I’d probably say B. It seems like the right amount of niche for a community and the 3DS is backwards compatible with DS games. I mean you can go back further to GBA but then you are either kind of alienating 3DS users or getting into modding and flashcarts
So, I’ll start with my Biases: I’ve got a 3DS, DSLite, and only one GBA game lol.
I don’t mind if this community shifts its focus more towards the DS family of handhelds, but I personally think we’ll have a healthier amount of activity if the scope is kept as it currently is (3DS & all prior.)
I appreciate GB/C/A discussion, as I got into Nintendo handhelds with the DS, so Gameboy is kind of a blind-spot for me. I’m not strongly-held to my stance though; and I recognize your point with /c/gameboy@lemmy.world.
I like the megathread idea, as I like to see others’ collections and see what games I might not have heard/known about otherwise; and I can see how such posts might otherwise clutter the community without a megathread.
Thanks for taking care of this community!
I agree with you! I think Gameboy is such a massive topic it requires a community of its own, but DS and 3DS at the very least complement each other nicely since 3DS is relatively light on major heavy hitters by itself imo.
Hey there! Firstly, thanks for creating the community. I personally always enjoyed seeing 3DS and DS together - but not other Nintendo console lines mixed in. In fact, from my experience on Reddit, this would seem like the ideal combination for users too. I agree with the megathread for collections and pickups. Bi-weekly discussions on one specific topic is also a fantastic way of creating engagement, specially in the early days.
It’s also possible that we might need a sticky for dealing with homebrew-specific tech support, that’s a huge part of the discussion about the 3DS but also a major source of repetitive posts or effortless content.
I’m also happy to be joining as a moderator, please count on me to help this community thrive.
Yep we actually do have a sticky regarding modding, but there are separate communities for !3dshacks@lemmy.ml , !ndshacks@lemmy.ml and !3dspiracy@lemmy.dbzer0.com so other than that sticky, I’d rather just be pointing people there (unless those communities are dead, then we may reconsider).
Same with GB - well I still think it’s fine if people want to discuss them here (such as playing GB games on 3DS), I’m pointing to !gameboy@lemmy.world in the sidebar. I just need to change the banner to erase that SP… That G&W is still too good tho and should be at home both with DS and GB families as the grandaddy of all handhelds.
It’s kind of a reverse situation of what I have on !playstation@lemmy.world where I now ask people to slow down ps5 content and rather post anything else.
You’re appointed, now show off that fancy 3ds in the collection sticky :p
