A corporate landlord’s attempt to raise rent by £17.92 a month has backfired spectacularly after a tribunal forced the firm to instead charge its tenant £210 less.
London-based buy-to-rent firm Get Living was ordered to cut the monthly charge from £2,560 to £2,350 in August after tenant Davide Martinelli took his case to a first-tier tribunal.
Martinelli’s contract had a “rent review clause” under which rent could be increased with inflation, but such clauses were abolished under the Renters’ Rights Act, the tribunal noted. It then went further and ruled that the amount he was already being charged was above market rates.
It is the eighth time a landlord has been made to reduce rent after trying to increase it since the act came into force in May. On average, tribunals have ordered a reduction of £58 a month, according to industry advisory firm LonRes.
Get rekt parasites
But £2,500 a month! Rent!
Fuck me.
That is almost 3x my mortgage on the south coast.
London may have more jobs but I don’t know if they will pay 3x as much.
10% London weighting is best I can do you
Then wtf is the point of moving to London? I know someone obsessed with it and yet they never seem to find jobs that pay much more than everyone else is on. +£150 a month pay, -£600 car, fuel, maintenance? Lol ok.
Less need for a car, access to all the things.
So, exactly the same as every other major city then?
I don’t need a car here either. I can get anywhere in town in under 15 minutes, next town over in 25. Bus to the next town over is around 30-40 minutes, car during rush hour is up to 60.
I love London. One of my favorite places in the world where I have so many friends and I’m never bored. Always something to do …
Went back there to visit recently and things got even more pricier after COVID. I’m surprised people even go out as much. I bought some beers as Tesco’s and drank them at the park because the bars and pubs were so pricey.
We have parks and Tesco outside London too. But we sometimes go for after work drinks at the pub and it’s £1.99 a pint.
The whole of the south east is only worth living in if A you we born here so the emotional cost of moving is too high or B you’re a banker wanker.
I live in the south east now and its about the same cost as when I lived in the south west. The south east covers quite a wide area. Moved from Wiltshire to Hampshire.
Maybe I should edit to say the whole of the south
But then the north doesn’t seem great since Thatcher fucked it with her massive strap on
Maybe, but some pockets of the south are way more than others. Plenty of houses under 250k here.
Welcome to London. Please enjoy your £8 pint while you overcome your rent shock.
Is this something anyone can use? If I’m renting through agency, what are my options?
It’s a start.
