In an ideal world the studios would care & you could optionally not download high-rez textures, immediately cutting the download in half, or less than.
That’s about a third of a base PS5’s drive.
Technically it’s 850GB, but only around 650 is usable, as shown in the console’s storage settings.
why is their shovelware os 200ish gb
The more and more I learn about GTA 6 the less and less I want to play it.
I do hope it is fun for those who want to play it, this is no longer my cup of tea.
If the download is 210 GB, I hate to think what the install size will be after everything is unzipped.
Likely around 280-300 gigs. Most games don’t unpack their files nowadays. They decompress them on the fly.
So the install size tends to not be that much bigger then the download.
Even still that’s like a third of a ps5s storage iirc
If they unpack things more for the pc release tho… It could readily balloon to almost a terabyte if they wanted to be assholes.

I know this may sound ignorant to modern game development, but do we optimize anymore? I know storage is not an issue most developers worry about these days, but God.
I don’t like to play the old card, because I’m by no means “old”, but I remember when I wanted to install a game, I had to choose what I needed to uninstall first. A game being 500MB to 1GB was mind boggling.
Ugh, installing World of Xeen was tough. Needed to free up a whopping 50 MB of space or so. But at least the install of Darkside of Xeen had some dancing stick figures you could look at while swapping floppies.
Add to that the fact that they all need SSD’s so whatever HDD storage you have is useless now.
Given prices of hardware these days devs should definitely be better at this.
They throw in massive poly count models with high resolution textures and ever bigger game worlds, then (on PC) let you scale down the quality.
Only real solution is having high res textures as a separate download which some games do but if the console can handle them anyway, there’s less reason, compared to PC where you might have a lower end graphics card that can’t handle 4K textures anyway
On consoles, developers still duplicate assets for HDD optimization (faster loading, more storage). Often they don’t bother to ‘fix’ that for PC when ported.
Current gen consoles have NVMe thankfully so that bullshit is now obsolete at least
I stand corrected!
The PS5 was supposed to have fixed that duplication issue with it’s SSD and how data from it is retrieved and cached
I’m not buying it and most of my existing games are 40gb or smaller. Many of my games are actually under 20gb
The only game I have installed right now that’s over 20GB is Team Fortress 2
okay 👍🏻
A “news” telling people the download-size of some game…wow. And it’s slightly bigger than other AAA. Astonishing.
Download-siizes rose for the last 3 decades, who would have ever expected that…
When you consider the fact that Rockstar has made it clear they aren’t putting this out on a disc, and the PlayStation hard drive can be as little as 1TB, this is definitely news worth discussing. They’re asking for one fourth of your entire storage space if you’re a PlayStation player.
And you think they give a rat’s ass about your Playstation-storage? :-) People will buy it, even if it needs a playstation for itself. Or came with a playstation bundled. Which only allowed GTA6 on it but costs triple. It would still sell like crazy. At least you now know why they CAN’T put it onto a disc, even if they wanted to :)
So. Will you buy it? if yes, then what are you even talking about? If no, then welcome to the boat, where is the actual problem? When I will maybe buy this in 3-7yrs, i would not care for the 0,2tb it wants anymore. I would not care today, but that’s not really the point.
Yeah but until recently that tracked the decreasing cost of storage, so you might think devs would be prioritizing lower filesizes now
Can’t believe I’m defending Rockstar here but…
…it’s been in development for over a decade. How would they have planned around this recent surge in prices
They could have spent that last year or two optimizing the game.
But considering it took some random person on the internet to reverse-engineer the code for GTA V to figure out why online loading times took so long, an issue they left alone for years, I doubt they even spent a minute trying to get file size down.
Compared to the 3000,- a 20MB drive cost said decades ago, storage is cheap 😁 But you say that as if the big studios care about such things. People will pay full price (or probably higher) anyway. Even if it’d be 1TB download.
Yeah but compared to 1.5 years ago, storage is up 2x at least. Even HDDs are more expensive than same size NVME SSDs used to be, it seems.
Everything is closing in at 2x of 1.5yrs ago, so what? Do you use LLMs? Then you’re part of the reason, why are you complaining? Don’t? Then sorry bro…
Besides, my initial post explicitly said “last 3 decades”, so the reference frame was fitting. Despite not being totally serious…
