Yeah, when students do that, it’s because they’ve forgotten proper openings.
When a masters do that, it’s because they have well thought-out plans.
Can’t remember to attribute this quote but it goes, “Masters are people who make beginner mistakes on purpose for a reason.”
You gotta know the rules before you can break them. That’s why there are no rules.
Rules are like side wheels, there to help you learn.

Didnt Magnus receive a lot of criticism for insulting chess becausd he played the bongcloud?
Even when Magnus bongclouds, he can still beat all but like 10 other people in the world.
Out of those 10 other people there will also be Hikaru Nakamura who will almost certainly respond to bongcloud with boncloud. 🗿
For the memes, of course
Was that in a tournament or something? Online ranked is one thing, but OTB at a tournament would be legendary.
It was in a tournament but both players already qualified for the next round so it didnt really matter.
Found the wikipedia source:
On 15 March 2021, GM Magnus Carlsen, playing white, led with the Bongcloud in a game against Nakamura at the Magnus Carlsen Invitational. Nakamura mirrored the opening with 2…Ke7?, leading to a position nicknamed the Double Bongcloud.[2] The game was intentionally drawn by threefold repetition after the players shuffled their kings back and forth, and the opening was later jokingly named the Bongcloud Countergambit: Hotbox Variation. The game occurred in the last round of the preliminary stage of the tournament, and both players had already qualified for the following knockout stage, making the game a dead rubber. It marked the first recorded occurrence of 1.e4 e5 2.Ke2 Ke7 in a major tournament.[2][7]
He’s moved onto chess 2.
