Members of the band are transgender, including singer Marina Hanly, who — as equipment was being unloaded — needed to use the washroom.

“As I was just outside of the washroom … trying to mentally prepare to just go in there, the bartender came up and taped up a little handwritten paper sign outside the door that said ‘ladies only,’ and said, ‘Hey, we’re very strict about this,’” Hanly said.

Band member George Finley said he found Hanly to the side of the stage area and asked about what happened. He said he walked to the washroom and “ripped down the sign” before approaching the bar and asking for an explanation.

Bigotry like this has no place in Canada. Fuck that venue and I hope it goes under or gets better management.

There’s a ton of bigotry like this in Canada, even if it has no place here or anywhere else on earth

They don’t have bathrooms backstage for the bands? Sounds like a shitty venue to begin with.

As someone who has played in bands for decades, i guess the band has found something important to put on their tech riders in the future.

CBC News spoke with someone who identified themselves as the manager of Sportsman’s Club. They didn’t provide their name but said the business tries to accommodate transgender people. They said that doesn’t include access to washrooms and the venue does not have gender-neutral facilities.

I wish the CBC had asked this manager exactly what they mean by “accommodate transgender people.”

It is grounds for a human rights case according to the article (or a related article, can’t remember which one).
