The town of Kamloops was where one of the most recent unveilings of atrocities of the residential school system. It was a program to “help” the indigenous people adjust to the colonial usurpation of their lands and way of life.
What it actually resulted in massive mistreatment, atrocities, genocide, and erasure of the students in their care.
A site in Kamloops recently(inside the last 15 years) was revealed to have found another 50 ish bodies that were hidden.
The holiday truth and reconciliation was created a few years ago to acknowledge the problem and it was a big deal because it also was the first time the government of Canada officially acknowledged it
Somebody replied with what happened already, so I will add that this day (Sept 30th) is Canada acknowledging the crimes of the government and church with Truth and hopefully Reconciliation of those events with the Indigenous people…
But heres the Truth: Our government didn’t make it a federal holiday, so only some provinces treat it as a holiday where you can go and watch an indigenous celebration.
When it was instituted our Premier (Trudeau) was in British Columbia on the Holiday and rather than meet with the Indigenous leaders at a celebration, he went to his island home to chill out. To me this showed exactly how much Canada cared about Reconciliation.
Also, the church still refuses to admit they did anything wrong, and in Ontario, half our schools are run by the same cult of pedophilic sex offenders.
Yeah now I’m in BC I forgot about the Catholic School Board in Ontario. We don’t have that here. (Our education taxes can go to registered individual schools at 50% rate, but not the 100% amount likebyou can designate public or separate in Ontario)

It was a huge political blunder. The sort of mistake that doesn’t make sense at all until you remember that he spent the day with his wife, and got divorced not long after. He was trying to save his marriage. He shouldn’t’ve let his marriage get so precarious that he’d have to make a fuckup like that to try to save it, so I’m not excusing him, but I think it helps to understand it.
I don’t know what you mean by both, it’s not a coverup story. It’s my attempt to understand how a politician so obsessed with virtue signaling could fuck it up so badly. It’s the only explanation I’ve seen that makes any sense.
You could meet indigenous leaders for an hour and still go work on your relationship later. We don’t know that he was working on his marriage, other than if he offered that as an excuse later. As a leader of the country you sort of need to put the job ahead of personal plans
Well there is progress but the RCMP still treat the Indigenous like dogs in many places. Thy would drive walk drunken indigenous out of town to a snowy area to sober up and leave them there. Many froze to death.
Oh shit I thought that doc was an indictment not a defense.
The RCMP systematically exterminated dog teams that were used for transportation etc. very effectively destroying the ability for those communities to be self sufficient.
When the dogs were killed, Inuit were abruptly forced into settlements, adopting a non-Inuk way of life that severed their vital connection to the animals, land, and sea, as well as the traditions that had been passed down for as long as can be remembered.
This should be a better account of the impact of this.
Settler violence reached abhorrent, crimes against humanity level of evil when the Canadian government, aided by the Catholic church, abducted indigenous children from their homes and forced them into residential schools in an attempt to force their (indigenous people generally) complete assimilation into western norms and culture. Many sufferred horrific abuse while there, many died; the trauma is generational.
These degenerate losers deny it or embrace it.
TRC is a day we set aside to remember them and our need to heal.

I’m deeply touched to learn that not only do the Canadian people stand up against these horrible events. But they do so out of their own vollition.

Minor detail, but it wasn’t just the Catholic Church. It was all Christian denominations.
but mostly catholics.
