Since text is hard to decipher emotion, I always add emojis or emoticons to let others know that I’m in a good mood and am enjoying the conversation.

I don’t really care if the other person doesn’t like it, at least I don’t seem like a sour puss the entire conversation. :-)

I had a younger guy at my job ask me if I was mad at him once because I used punctuation in a Teams message. Nah, bro, I’m just in my 40s.

Pretty common. Experimentally, it seems the implicit formula many use for IM is something like

      Fewer than K words + a period = probability P(deliberately curt) = 50%, where K is at least 5, and P increases logarithmically as K approaches 1.

Which is how, to someone using this formula internally, “Great.” can denote exasperation, “Thanks.” can imply strained manners, and so forth 🤷

I remember when I started encountering somewhat younger adults verbally spell out chat acronyms like “lmao” and “rofl.” I thought it was hilarious, but eventually realized there had been a social shift. Interactions had become online-first, and for some younger people that was basically all of it, and I wasn’t sure how I felt about that.

Curious if you’re a millennial. I never used to use lol, then everyone I texted was using it and I felt like if I didn’t I was coming across as too serious and not friendly so I started using it, then people started to make fun of everyone who used it and say it was a millennial thing and now I’m so self conscious every single time I use it but I can’t stop

I never really used “lol” and even when I sometimes want to, it just feels weird so I end up not to.

I’m still the same, just with smiley faces :) used to practically use them as periods at the end of a sentence :D

Funny, because this is what I think when someone says lol. Just a blank, expressionless face whenever I send someone something funny. That, and lmao or rofl. I highly doubt anyone has ever resorted to rolling on the floor from laughing so hard at something sent in a text.

Emojis are perceived differently by different people. For example:

      🙂

What does it mean? Am I friendly? Or am I imagining the sound it would make if I slapped you in the face?

      Or this one:

      😉

Am I being ironic? Or am I trying to get in your pants?

      Such mystery.
