As regulations have reduced prenatal exposure to harmful emissions from vehicles and industry in recent years, smoke from climate-fueled wildfires is erasing air quality gains.

Prenatal exposure to wildfire smoke significantly increases the likelihood that babies will be born too early or too small, raising their risk of dying early or developing chronic respiratory conditions and other diseases later in life.

    To consider it in the bluntest of terms, wildfires kill surprisingly few people: perhaps hundreds around the world each year, compared to thousands from floods and hundreds of thousands from heatwaves. That is, of course, of little comfort to the people across Spain and France returning to burned-out homes, or to the families of firefighters, locals and tourists who have died in the past few weeks. But what scares me far more is the smoke. Recent studies peg the global death toll from wildfire smoke at 1.5 million people per year.

    9 million a year die from starvation, another 9 million for air pollution, I think it’s safe to assert we really don’t give a fuck.
