What I heard about masks (not from Fauci) was that they don’t at all prevent you from catching COVID, but they do help prevent you from spreading COVID.

The other part of that is, maybe they are not 100% effective at stopping you catch it, but they may provide SOME protection, especially when coupled with social distancing, and everyone wearing (stopping you from spreading).

And, what is 100% not going to stop the spread, is wearing nothing.

This doesn’t even get into slowing the spread so hospitals don’t become overwhelmed and staff crippled by being sick and other, non COVID patients being unable tonget treatment. If grandpa has a heart attack but can’t get help because the heart doc ended up with COVID, and grandpa dies, he didn’t die from.COVID, but COVUD still killed him.

They are more effective at not spreading it but also help somewhat in not catching it. A sneeze can carry the virus a very long distance without a mask, and a mask can provide a barrier but having contact isn’t great even with a mask.

That sounds like an everyone but me problem!

Really though, I do have a friend who would take it that way. His take was “vaccines won’t stop this from existing, so why bother?” Slowing the spread, lowering the risk, and hindering the symptoms meant nothing at the peak of the pandemic.
