I’ve never drafted a pattern but I want to make one from an image. The finished object would look really nice with backstitching in my opinion.
What are some good tools that would enable me to make a pdf pattern that I can plug in pattern keeper and include backstitching as well?
This is a really tricky one. I actually made a video comparing all the free tools I could find last summer, scoring them on how well they converted three different sorts of image and whether they generated Pattern Keeper compatible files. As you can see there was no perfect tool that did everything, and not many of them were much use in terms of Pattern Keeper! The other complication being backstitch, as PK doesn’t handle that regardless.
What definitely does make good PK files is WinStitch, which isn’t free but is fairly affordable if you plan to make a habit of this. I’ve not really used its image conversion feature but it’s popular software so there are probably examples made with it all over the internet. The demo might be worth a look to see how it works, if you don’t find anything free.
I’ve used Stitch Fiddle in the past to create designs from an image (although I’ve only made a few patterns myself). The site also has a “draw line” feature so you can add in your backstitching. They do have a download your project feature, but idk if they give pdf as an option.
I do find their designs require a little tweaking tho since they add a bunch of colors/gradients along the line edges. To do this I basically just delete or reassign the unnecessary colors to the main color. That way I don’t have to manually edit each pixel and the process isn’t too tedious.
