Not trying to stoke the flames here, but genuinely curious what phenomenon the meme is pointing too? Again, not trying to come from a place of concern trolling or anything. Please don’t bully me~~~

I don’t think people should have to do that, but including context is generally an important part of asking a question.

Like if I’m trying to fix a problem and I need help I’d be like “I’m getting error code 123 on my printer (make, model). I’ve tried turning it off and on again, unplugged it from the wall, but the error always pops up as soon as it finishes powering on. Anyone have any experience with this and how to solve it?”

Your example is not at all the same thing. To make your example fit you’d need to change it to something like: “hey guys I’ve tried googling this and I’m just not very good with printers as unfortunately I haven’t owned one until now”. Then asking the actual question, like then place what you said after what I said.

You shouldn’t need to have the part I said. You’re basically adding in the part because you’re worried someone might call you an idiot or something for not knowing the answer to your question if it turns out it’s something simple that other people know (simple for people who know it anyway).

          That’s the point…

Any unusual want caused by unusual life circumstances. If the people who could know how to help you, don’t want to because they can’t related, they wont. If you don’t have the bog standard life goals, you’ll be stuck in the mud.

No, I shouldn’t have had to explain to my guidance counselors why I wanted out of the remedial classes. I shouldn’t have had to deal with 4 years in high school of them attempting to gaslight into believe that a career is the only thing I need to worry about.

I feel like in a lot of cases the context is also sometimes important to differentiate between a real-life idiot and someone who is “Just Asking Questions.”

The trite disclaimer is one thing, but explaining how you came to the specific question you’re asking helps me trust that it’s worth giving you an actual explanation rather than the dismissal that some folks want so they can post it on wherever the new home is for “so much for the tolerant left” bullshit.

Well they were designed to break apart solid rocks so if you used it on soft tissue you misused the device in a way it wasn’t built for and deserve to keep it that way as a reminder to your stupidity.

Next time use an electric handheld bone saw to break apart a corpse you silly fuck.

I swear on Reddit you couldn’t post anything without having to spend 5 minutes proof-reading it to make sure there wasn’t a way to misinterpret anything intentionally or unintentionally and that you haven’t left any gaps in your explanation that someone could fill for you. If you missed anything some parasite would downvote you, twist what you said against you to make you look like something worse than Hitler and rally up everyone against you.

    Fuck that place.

Yup, it’s really sad because very few speak out in defense of anyone but themselves. Hell, I saw a user bully another user here and heavily imply they were mentally disabled. A few users defended the bullied user, the bully doubled down. Hours later the bullied user returned to mention they had COVID… so you might imagine the bullying let up, but the bully doubled down, yet again. Followed by more mentally disabled remarks. Looking back, appears the bully stopped using said account entirely and is likely under a new username. But it’s disappointing how few users actually said something. We have to keep this place clean from the shitty old Reddit behaviors.

Heh. If you’re so smart, why did you make a typo? I’m not going to listen to an idiot who doesn’t know the difference between <word you typed> and <word you clearly meant>.

You’ve got to be on constant alert or your phone’s autocorrect changing lets to let’s at the wrong time will derail the entire conversation.

Sadly, you often need to justify questions offline as well. It’s just that people love gatekeeping and making fun of others if you show weakness or ignorance. On top of that, you can’t convey tone as easily through text, so genuine misinterpretations are common. People also give hostile responses when others have asked the same question in bad faith.

IMO the proper thing to do is to answer the question and make damn sure the poster isn’t falling for the XY Problem.

Sometimes the weird solution is justified by a weird context, and we gotta treat people like adults. But also, you’re probably asking the wrong question.

Like, I can tell you how to disconnect your bike’s brake lines, but if you’re asking how to do that with no context I would most definitely like to know what problem you think you’re solving.

I was thinking something similar today regarding this simple post I saw on Reddit. So there was a post about the owner cuddled up to its elderly dog downstairs at night because the dog has a hard time going up the stairs now. It was a cute pic and that should be it, but it made me irrationally mad when someone asked, “why can’t the dog sleep upstairs”. Like stfu dude, there are plethora of reasons, but would getting your answer really change the perspective of this post in any way?
