The app was crashing instantly on a family member’s phone, and looking up the problem got me a lot of recent posts about the issue.
Fix:
- Go to the play store and find the app, either by searching for it, using the
installed apps
list, or this link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.maps - It should have a button for “Uninstall”, with a note about only uninstalling updates as it is a system app
- Select uninstall, and then open the app
You may also need to disable automatic updates for the app until this gets fixed.
- Repeat the first step to open the app page
- Tap the 3 dot menu
- Uncheck “Enable Auto Update”
If you are still experiencing issues, consider using Organic Maps
in the meantime. It works just as well as Google Maps for a lot of tasks, and it uses OSM datahttps://organicmaps.app/
If you want to help update the data, see this other app StreetComplete
https://streetcomplete.app/
Even if you aren’t experiencing issues (yet), install organic maps anyways
If you are still experiencing issues, consider using Organic Mapsin the meantime😀Made the switch a few weeks ago after learning about it here, and I don’t think I could ever go back to Google Maps. Street and satellite view are nice, but I am quickly realizing how much I don’t really need them (if OM has sat view, I haven’t found the option to enable/download those layers). It’s just so nice that the actual map part of the software is the focus rather than all the clutter Google’s thrown into theirs
The only thing I wished worked with it is Android Auto. I tried developer options and everything, it refuses to run in the car, at least the F-Droid version.
They haven’t implemented it yet. And probably won’t. It has been years coming soon.
The last time I check it out, it doesn’t have public transportation yet, at least for my area/country. Otherwise, I like it better than Google Maps already.
I was looking for it myself, it’s in the works!
https://github.com/organicmaps/organicmaps/blob/master/docs/EXPERIMENTAL_PUBLIC_TRANSPORT_SUPPORT.md
It looks like my area/city has GTFS support, so it should work once implemented. You could check the list for your location too
If they ever get android auto working but st this point its not an issue for them.
