Eternal already took the tone in a direction that ruined the franchise for me.

Unless this takes things back towards the tone of 2016, this game is DOA for me.

I didn’t play Eternal (for no specific reason, just too many good games around) but I heard a lot about the gameplay changes and the crticism. I only van say that 2016 was great, I just love the chaotic violence and the artstyle and the motherfucking music, man.

You might enjoy Eternal - they took all those aspects and put them into overdrive. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but I love the balance they struck.

Yeahight be. But man, I can’t keep up with all the games releasing the last five years or so. Teenager-me would be in heaven and here I struggle to finally finish Persona 5.

IMO it’s just a tad overboard, but I don’t mind that as much, since you can ignore some of the gameplay mechanics if you want.

But I had to stop playing it because I realized I was hating every second of it. The shift in tone towards “they’re not undead, just mortally challenged lol” just isn’t Doom to me.

It felt like the game was spitting in my face every few seconds.

Which is a pity because it’s objectively a good game that I’m unable to enjoy playing.

I’m a bit surprised that this part was so negative for you. The story itself focused so much on the “overly serious badass” side that these elements provided nice comic relief, while also characterising the methods by which the legions of hell conquer other worlds. Audio logs from the resistance paint a very different picture.

If you care to, could you explain further what you disliked?

That’s exactly the stuff I wanted to enjoy. I really wanted to like the game. I adore 2016 as a perfect package where every component works in concert.

But the punchline, punchline, punchline stuff that the game keeps shoving in your face, kept taking me out of it.

In actual gameplay, I got constantly immersion broken by every headshot, and every other glory kill that had some element of slapstick. It felt like a dude next to me at the movies who kept elbowing me to see if I get every joke.

I really appreciated the humour in 2016, like just the right amount of salt to make a steak perfect.

Eternal is like a pile of just salt, with some steak buried in there somewhere. I still want the steak, but it’s kinda ruined.

For me, the challenge of getting into the game was due to the game being a lot more opionated about how to play it (although I was loving it by the end, just a bit of whiplash from 2016). A game having a “right way to play” isn’t always bad, for example hi-fi rush wants you to play to the rhythm and it adds to the game. However, I think some people just wanted to blow up demons. For me, the style of play Doom Eternal pushed worked well.

Indeed. And I can’t play it because it constantly makes me feel like I’m Bugs Bunny, not the motherfucking Doomslayer.

Buddy. Do I not get to have an opinion?

The Looney Toons sound effects just ruin the game for me. Stuff like the cacademons LOUDLY gulping grenades, their eye pop sound, headshots sounding like fucking champagne bottles…

Some people seem to notice none of it, and enjoy the shit out of the game, but for me:

            I want brutality. Not slapstick.

Man, I disagree with him, but he’s giving his review politely and descriptively . That’s already a high bar for the internet.

I respect that. But I can also disagree and make fun of it. Why do I need to delve deep into why I disagree with them? Honestly, they never give an in depth reason, other than looney toons.

You don’t need to “prove” or “justify” your disagreeing with him, you just need to question whether it’s worth responding to it with a non-comment (eg an emoji) and/or a downvote. Traditionally, downvotes are best used not as a button for disagreeing, but whether people respectfully contribute to discussion. I’d say a well-worded post that brings up an interesting point of debate, even if you disagree as a matter of opinion with their conclusion, is worth upvoting. If you don’t have anything to add, you don’t have to comment.

All this would matter more for discussing, say, politics, than whether a game was good, so it’s just a general tip of mine.

Of course you get to disagree 🤣

But no you don’t. You acted with anything BUT respect for a fellow person.

And no you don’t again. Disagreement is not a licence to belittle.

Since when does disagreeing with someone mean you “get to” make fun of them?

I have valid reasons for why the game doesn’t jell with me, and I have no problem with other people enjoying it. I personally can’t. Due to various changes in tone, writing, SFX, and level design, compared to Doom 2016. Overall, the changes result in a game that forces me out of my immersion every few seconds. It makes it unplayable for me.

I didn’t exactly set out to explain my reasons in response to you, because I was more concerned with telling you off for responding like a dick.

Games are an art form, and not every game can be enjoyed by every person, or for the same reasons. The reasons I enjoyed 2016, aren’t there in Eternal. Period.

That doesn’t mean there can’t be more of the stuff you enjoyed, making it an upgrade.

Both our experiences can make sense. Eternal is an upgrade in every way you care about, but that doesn’t make it an upgrade in every way conceivable.

Third person cutscenes aren’t objectively better than first person ones. Looney Toons sound effects aren’t objectively better than brutal meat noises. Turning up the comedic self-awareness of the writing isn’t objectively better than a ridiculous story that’s funny because internally takes itself completely seriously.

                    Lastly.

Fuck you for belittling me with the sole excuse of not understanding why I don’t like Doom Eternal. Then pulling an “I respect it”. No, asshole, you shat all over me.

I didn’t set out to change your opinion, but to express mine. “LOL, ur opinion makes no sense” is literally just an insult, because it doesn’t need to make sense to anyone except me.

Now, if I held this opinion without having ever played Eternal myself, then you’d have grounds to dismiss my experience. Because I wouldn’t have an experience.

                Deep.

Does that explain why you’re trying to shove the shit from yours up mine by suggesting mine makes no sense, or is worth laughing at?
