I’d like a garden that’s useful for cooking - herbs, basic veg/tomatoes. But I don’t really know where to start.
I had a small patch of herbs, but it was overrun by weeds. I’d like to start this spring with a fresh raised garden bed in my (small) front garden. It receives a decent amount of sun.
Are there any good resources out there for establishing a garden like this in Melbourne? Google obviously is fairly northern-hemisphere oriented, so seasons/availability don’t really align.
Things I’m curious about are –
- what to plant
- when to plant
- when to harvest
- how to harvest
- how to deal with pests
- how to deal with weeds
- seeds vs. seedlings
- how often to water
- how much to water
- to feed or not to feed
I would highly recommend looking up the Diggers club and becoming a member. They provide so much information about gardening year-round in Victoria specifically: https://www.diggers.com.au/
I will check them out. Thank you!
I like the book, ‘Garden like a Nonno’. It’s by a Melbourne author and is a simple collation of her Nonno’s gardening tips. Covers all the things you’ve mentioned and is actually a nice coffee table book too.
Awesome, thank you!
The first thing that you need to do is read up on your area and talk to locals to see what they are doing. Or walk around your area and see what people are growing to get ideas for your own garden. Ask for cuttings. Ask for tips. The worst thing that can happen is they say no.
Here’s a starting point for you:
If you can get past the first TWO points on your list, you can ask questions then about the rest. It’s a very broad range of information that you have requested.
Good luck!
Do you mean actually talk to people? In real life? 😱
Thanks for the article!
Yes. Gardeners are everywhere!
I was referring more to my introverted nature and aversion to talking to strangers. 😅
