Programmer Humor@programming.dev•tech never works for longEnglish
1·3 days agoThis made me wonder, are there any mechanical switches that can be switched by a smart something? As in, a regular switch where the user always has mechanical control, even when the smart system is down, but that optionally can be switched by a smart sytem, state reading is optional.

Okay sure, having and releasing the Epstein files can be adventagious for Iran. But what I don’t see is how demanding the files would ever lead to peace. Wouldn’t it only incite Trump and co. instead of getting to a reasonable negotiating position?

Global News@lemmy.zip•Zelensky warns Iran war 'emboldening' Russia after Ukraine meets Trump officialsEnglish
3·1 month agoUkraine’s current main limitation appears to be funding, not troops or production capacity (although those are also precarious). Short-term they are diverting resources from their own frontline, but mid- to long-term it will allow them to increase their production capacity.
Being able to supply more drones to their frontline allows them to achieve more per deployed soldier. I recently learned that with enough drones, they need only a fraction of the troops they needed previously to hold the line. This means that selling equipment in the short-term could address their financial and reqruitment issues in the mid- to long-term.
Given that Ukraine is still holding on after more than 4 (or 3?) years of war, I think it’s safe to say that Ukrainian leadership has a good grasp of what they’re doing and that selling tech is a smart decision. With the worst of the winter behind them, they have less of a need for anti-drone drones. They just need to have enough of them before next winter.

Global News@lemmy.zip•Iran war cuts off helium from Qatar, and shortages will start to bite in a few weeks, threatening chip supply chains that fuel the AI boomEnglish
10·1 month agoI don’t think they are, at least not a major one. Helium is important in chip production, Qatar probably captures some from their oil/gas fields and exports it.
2009 maybe doesn’t sound super long ago, but it’s 17 years, that’s almost the midpoint between now and when operating systems became mainstream.

2·1 month agoI’m not super familiar with Leopard armor specs, but isn’t 25 mm super low? I suppose it can be fine since the crew is not longer in the turret and the system offers upgrades in other areas (mainly the gun).
