I use Fedora as my main distro and was already playing with the idea of switching to another one because of RedHats (or IBMs) decision to partially close the source code.
This made my decision, I will abonden Fedora. Which is sad because the OS is overall a great distro and runs stable (especially with Sway) but the decisions regarding RedHat products just go in a very wrong direction…
What they did with the open source community was kind of a shot in their own foot. Time will tell how much it will impact the company.
As far as I can see, there are already companies switching to Rocky Linux or OpenSUSE, a few sysads I know are in the process of doing so as we speak. Time will tell.
I just hope that this is not the start of other open source enterprises closing the source code to generate more short term money.
Would be nice to see them get more ground. I think for a lot of people, rocky will be a good choice.
So if i understand correctly this is just a proposal, right? Nothing has been definitely decided yet.
Yes, it seems to be a proposal but they look pretty clear on this decision.
But isn’t Fedora community still independent of redhat, albeit having a close relationship?
If I remember correctly they get most of the funding from RedHat and are therefore kind of dependend on RH. But I do not know the exact dependencies of the project.
I know what you mean and I understand your concern about the tie between Fedora and RedHat corp
For me I just don’t feel worried about the situation, plus I am biased because I enjoy Fedora, podman and Ansible way too much.
All the best to your Distro hopping
