Rather than penalize drivers who don’t put others’ lives at risk, the government should have harsher penalties for drunk driving.

Driving drunk is one of those few crimes where there will NEVER be extenuating circumstances that justify it. I drink, but I will never get behind the wheel after even a single beer. The penalty for DUI should be at least a mandatory 1 year in jail and permanent loss of your license. This is one of those few cases where harsh minimum mandatory sentences make sense.

    Fine.

But unless there’s also a plan to get DECADES worth of vehicles, manufactured before said kill switch, off the roads, it’ll amount to a fart inna wind storm.

Most cars have back up cameras now and that was just mandated for 2018 Model Year. The average age of vehicles is about 12 years, so it could be quicker, but that’s not bad for a broad mandate
