I had a tire pressure warning come up on screen during the drive yesterday but the on board computer said I can resume the drive as the car is equipped with run-flat tires.
Well, it turns out that these Pirelli tires are not run flats and the pressure dropped quickly and below critical. The car has no spare tire, no tire-puncture fix solutions in place, no high-jack or even a pump included.
The car is the “Ultimate pack”… Does this sound normal?
Bought the car new from BMW.
Yes. BMWs suck.
It’s not that BMWs suck so much as BMW’s business practices suck.
M cars don’t come with run flat tires, many BMWs don’t come with those kit’s unless you worked it into the deal. Even still I rarely see them. You have a X5M it’s performance based vehicle, no spare tire as it would be massive. 21’ wheels in front and 22’ in the back. No jacks either. You aren’t missing anything from the car just don’t let it happen.
These Pilerril turned out to be not run flats, although the on board computer was programmed to think they are run flats.
If BMW is cutting corners on the costs of run-flat tires, I would at least expect to see a pump for an emergency, no?
You are right in the regard that the screen shouldn’t tell you that they are run flats, if they aren’t. That is a serious safety flaw.
However as a responsible driver you should always know yourself wether you have run flats or not.
The car should 100% have a tire repair kit. Are you sure you didn’t miss anything?
No you are missing a tire.
Hilarious
Its tiring isnt it
Lmao
And a wheel.
Listen here you lil shit 😭
M cars never come with runflats.
That’s an MSport Competition, too.
You might be right but…this isn’t an M car so not relevant?
This sounds like a reasonable answer. The “if” bit I might have missed out on
Smartest BMW owner
What if you have the M40i? Does that count since it’s not a full M?
Depends on the spec. You can spec either all-season runflats, all-season regular, or summer regular.
Not an M at all…just a badge
Fake M, only WBS vin numbers are real M
M SUVs use a 5YM vin
True, they are fake Ms too
My car does not have runflats.
Not a full M is just not an M.
It’s M-sport which is just a fancy looks package BMW uses to make the car appear more premium.
The distinction for say the M340 is they have this package by default and so call them all M340 and so on, but effectively they are just slightly upbadged regular BMWs with a bigger engine so BMW can charge you more.
I believe my old E46 M3 came from factory with runflats since it didn’t come with a spare tire.
What did they do with 1Ms? Can of green in the trunk?
Iirc the bulk of 1s came with RFTs because zero room for a spare.
The cars come with roadside assistance. Use it. My wife somehow popped the bead on a runflat, used the SOS for a free tow.
I thought the new m4 CSL came with runflats?
Runflats can be optioned in or out on almost any model depending on packages and options. Anyone saying they all come with or without is incorrect.
It’s been a while but IIRC when you select track handling package you automatically get non-runflats.
You can’t have run flats on M models. It’s not part of the official configuration for M models.
Maybe some dealerships swap out the regular for RF at the customer’s request? Some folks (not me) prefer to have RFT since they want to continue driving to a repair shop if they get a flat/puncture. I have RFT on my X3 M40i and once had a nail/screw in a tire. Pressure dropped to low 20s. I drove about 10 miles doing 30-40mph max; got a plug installed, and the tire has been fine the last 1.5yrs. When these OEM tires wear out, im getting regular HP all seasons tires.
Would never have run flat tires.
Run flat tires have nothing to do with low pressure.
The pressure will go down completely. But that doesn’t matter because to car drives on the tires reinforced side wall, not relying on the remaining pressure.
Now that only works if they actually were run flat tires.
BMW comes with either run flats, a spare for some SUV, or the tire mobility kit which is a compressor and fix a flat juice.
If you bought the car used it’s possible the previous owner went with non-run flats or used the tank of fix a flat juice and did not put it back in the car.
People do anything for weight reductions these days…
Run flat is not available on any of the standard wheels for M when you built one.
But there is nothing stoping you for getting a run flat tire installed as long as it fits the wheel.
I bought a spare from an older x3 and carry it my trunk
BMW Motorsport cars come with an M mobility kit in the rear cargo area, under the carpet.
Those brake disks seem a bit small for the size of the car…
After reading all of the posts saying M cars don’t have run flats, I’m a bit confused. The new M2 comes with Pilot Sport 4S’s right? Aren’t those run flats? My Elantra N used to have them before I migrated.
