Former cellular industry worker here, for a team that is now owned by and works for Apple. My job was to direct the engineers toward what features cellular carriers were adopting and thus what features needed to be integrated into modems.
RCS was such a difficult topic. And Apple was the single source of contention.
Basically the entire world was like - RCS is good, we like it, but since Apple isn’t on board we’re going to develop our own version of RCS.
And then when my hardware / modem team would talk to Apple, they’d argue “well all the carriers don’t agree on what RCS is so we’re not doing it”
And round and round it would go. A giant stalemate.
In theory Apple could incorporate RCS and play nice with non-iPhones, and they always could have, but they didn’t care enough.
MAYBE it’s ubiquitous enough now that they can do it and trust their phones to work the same across all networks and with all non-iPhones. But that’s the benchmark, and I’m skeptical.
I’ll bet 2025 earliest.
But this has been a debate since 2011 AT LEAST.

Yeah it’s 100% about branding it absolutely worked. Apple’s blue iMessages has essentially created a social class divide in the US where most people are texting and not using third party messaging apps.
Not really. Only silly teenage minded folks care about that in the states. There is no social class divide upon most classes. Everyone that has a more developed brain just doesn’t care and globally it doesn’t matter at all really. Apple just kept it for a very specific class, but it would be disingenuous to say it created a social divide as if it affects people socially over most classes classes that aren’t around teenage age.
Apple, didn’t want to, because silly immature folks in their teens in the states might care about imessage being the only official apple supported messaging app. Most f the world doesn’t give a shit in general about imessage, but apple wanted to get those lacking in maturity to prefer it there’s. It’s really that simple. They got forced to work with others anyway.
Apple’s developed a much more powerful ecosystem than any android device, and they used that power to control the mobile carriers (from China to France to India and even Brazil). This had nothing to do with teens in the US - they wanted power to demand the world wide carriers to do what they wanted and this was one of the ways they did it. It’s much more complicated than iMessage.
That’s why I’m skeptical that RCS will happen in the near future.

Apple isn’t even the dominant platform globally dude. Most folks use androids not iphones globally. Most folks also don’t give a shit about imessage. They don’t even use it even if they have a iPhone globally.

I’m sorry you’re upset about Apple being what they are, but while most of the world doesn’t have an iPhone, Apple commands the dominant share of the phone market by dollars, and by software. And like it or not, every mobile carrier in the WORLD has to cater to Apple when it comes to device requirements. So after 15 years of working directly with these companies, I can confidently say Apple and their chosen feature set does matter, even if you don’t like it.

You seem extremely uneducated. Apple’s goal isn’t pure marketshare. They didn’t become a trillion dollar company dictating the entire smartphone market by selling iPhones for $100 trying to flood the market. Sorry you can’t comprehend that.

I’m sure the fact that Google flipped the script so that Messages reactions work in Google Messages, but now iPhone users get “Jim liked an image” and “Jim reacted to a message” texts instead probably helped things along.
Likely two reasons, I think.
One - the EU, as someone else said, will likely force Apple sooner rather than later.
Two - since there isn’t a formal well defined RCS standard that you just pick up and apply then this means they can write their own or interpret it in their favor and make Google adapt to them.

For real though, this is the right move for consumers and from a regulatory standpoint. I just hope they are genuine in their intentions and that they don’t still cripple the connection between Android users and iPhone just to maintain the height of the hedge around their walled garden.

No, they’re going to rant about it like little children until it comes out, then when it comes out they’ll complain about it not being how they wanted, just like they did with USB-C. Cue all of the “I’d get an iPhone if it had this.” crowd that then find a reason not to.
Next they’ll want the EU to mandate app icon placement.
Finally I’ll be able to get my iphone pointing in the right direction after I launch it into orbit.

iMessage remains. This is just an additional support tacked on.
I would suspect that they anouncment was made because Apple already know that they don’t win against the eu and want to anounce it themselves before the eu can say they have to adopt it.
I really hope this ends up being true. Apple, while I think their hardware is fantastic, has used their leverage over the US phone market to hold the industry back in a lot of ways. With the move to USB-C and hopefully moving to RCS, we can all be on the same page with connection and communication, and their hardware can start speaking for itself rather than feeling like they need to trap people in their ecosystem or else get the dreaded “green bubbles”.
