Apparently this was not how you remove the doorbell from its mount. What is the function of the ripped off ribbon cable? The doorbell is still showing signs of life.

That is how the optics and motion sensors communicate to the main board. I had a vandal do this to mine.

Ruined, sadly. You’ll need a new unit.

I can’t make out the cable info in the pic, but you might be able to find it on Ali Express or something. It looks like just a few screws to replace it.

Of course Google wants you to just buy a new one though.

A few chats with Alphabet customer support informed me that it’s not user-replaceable without a pretty big risk of further damage, even if you want to go through the process of a full teardown.

If anyone is interested: I fixed it. Bought one from eBay that was listed for parts and took out the component that had the ribbon cable soldered to it. Just had to attach it to my one and done! All in all an easy fix (if you can find that part). Saved me at least 100 euros.

FYI: that ribbon cable is not responsible for any functionality of the doorbell. It takes care of everything related to charging the battery.

Depends how it connects to the board. They tend to be extremely difficult to replace by hand. A frustrating property for such a fragile part.

You’re good mate they stick extra cables in there all the time, that one was just for show.

It connects to the circuit board. Probably providing communication to and from the camera. Still showing signs of life? Well the battery is right there, so everything that is still connected to the power supply is powered.

The reason I’ve asked this question is that it still shows all signs of life. Still detecting motion, door bell presses, camera is still online, there is still sound, it still runs on the battery… The only thing it didn’t do was charge via the cables in my wall (but that was the reason I tried taking it off in the first place so I can’t say if that’s because of that ribbon cable).

Lol, that’s weird. I just assumed the camera bits were in the front seeing as how the ribbon went to it. Looking closer at the picture I see what I assume are the sensors and what not. Anyway beats me, I’d have to look at it and fiddle with it at this point. I’ve made too many assumptions already. My apologies for not providing anything useful. Have a good one, hope you figure it out!
