I’ve been struggling to understand what happened for years so I figure this is as good a place as any to share. This happened the summer before my senior year of high school, I would have been 17 still. I’m 23 now, and I still think about it often. Me and my two best friends at the time had decided to get together one Friday night and hangout. We lived in a pretty small town, so there wasn’t too much to do, and we mostly just stayed indoors.
At some point we all decided to go for a walk down the road (like I said, small town so there’s barely any traffic, especially when it’s late). There had been some logging done a couple weeks prior near my buddy’s house we were staying at, and after a couple of minutes of walking, we came to where both sides of the road were cleared out of trees. On the left side of the road, there was this really faint orange glow coming from where the cut down trees ended, as if there was a fire going somewhere in the forest. The moon was very bright that night, I don’t even remember having to use my phone light to see. Still not sure why, but we just decided to go towards it, off the road and into the cut down trees. We ended up walking for what felt like a good half hour, not really going too fast as there were a couple of hard to traverse spots with tons of fallen trees. Eventually we got to a point to where we couldn’t go any further. There was a really steep drop off for what seemed like the whole length of the treeline (I found out it’s a ravine). If I had to guess it was probably about 20 feet to the other side, so there was no hope of getting across. On our side of the ravine was nothing but cleared trees, but on the other side the trees started just a few inches after the ravine and were very dense. I remember feeling really disappointed at seeing the ravine and the forest on the other side just out of reach.
I stopped right at the edge and bent down to catch my breath, and one of my friends laid down looking at the stars. My second friend was standing right next to where I was kneeling, staring across the ravine. At this point it was after midnight, I remember pulling out my phone to check the time and then looking back up. And that’s when I saw it. On the other side of the ravine, just two or three trees deep into the forest, was a pale white figure, standing in between two trees. I froze immediately, and I couldn’t look away from it. It was very humanoid, and looked to be about my height or taller (5’10) almost as if there was a man in a costume standing there. But everything in me told me that wasn’t a man standing there. I was so scared to move or take my eyes off of it, I just knew if I did it would come across the ravine at us. I worked up the courage to ask if anyone sees that, and out of my peripheral I saw my friend next to me turn his head at me. At that point I was terrified, because I realized that’s what he had been staring across at the whole time, and he had just confirmed I wasn’t seeing things. I heard my friend from behind ask “see what”, and not even a moment after that, before either of us could answer him, there was the loudest whistle I have ever heard. It sounded like someone had gotten right up behind me, bent down next to my ear, and whistled right in it. But it wasn’t any sort of whistle I had heard before, it was very deep. Still hear it in my head every now and then.
I guess this was what we needed to snap back to reality though, because as soon as I heard the noise I turned around as fast as I could and started running, and saw both of my friends had the same exact idea. There was not a word said the whole time, we were all three running very frantically back thru all of the cut down trees. I remember being so terrified, that if I slowed down for a second it would be on me. I remember making it back to the road first, and stopping to wait for my friends, but not even seconds later they both came crashing out together and we all kept booking it to my buddy’s house. It was a 30 minute walk but we made it back in 5, easily. We got to my buddy’s driveway and all collapsed, I remember thinking I might have a heart attack because my heart was beating so fast, and we were all scraped and bruised from the trees.
After we all got calmed down and cleaned up, I remember staying up for a couple more hours just huddled around inside doing research and talking about what happened. Me and my friend that was next to me both agree we definitely saw some pale, white figure, and all three of us heard the whistle, but my other friend to this day still says he never saw anything, only the whistle. My friend next to me says he remembers feeling the exact same fear that I felt when I described seeing him out of my peripheral, confirming what I saw seeing. He said that as soon as I asked if they saw it, he knew it wasn’t fake because I was seeing it too. It’s been 6 years and it still is so vivid when I think about it. Safe to say none of us go walking after dark anymore. After all the research we did, we agree it could have been the thing which shall not be named. Yeah, I won’t even type the name, that encounter scared me too badly. I get scared now if I even think about it. I don’t want to fully place the blame on that, but it’s the closest sounding thing in everything I’ve read. If anyone could shed some light on this, I’d be forever grateful.
