I’ll just say it:
Selling useless shit that kills the planet by keeping billions of people addicted to wasting their finite lives is morally wrong.
Nobody involved, whether it’s the company, influencers, or viewers will look back it from their deathbeds and see any good in it whatsoever.
I’m not sure doing good is the goal of anyone involved.
it never should have been.
Nah, plenty of these people will look back fondly on their sports cars, cocaine and lush homes.
That’s because they didn’t waste their money on plastic China waste while jerking a screen…appears that they actually lived a fulfilling lives while plebs were “entertained”
I’m not so sure. What I’ve heard is that pretty much everyone thinks about how they were with the people in their lives.
who. fucking. cares.
This “article” is straight astroturfing.
Like, there isnt like 90% of ShitTok / YT is just a paid mess of advertisment, sponsorships and self advertisments for their “Prime” flavored drink that gets you cancer if you arent subscribed.
gets you cancer if you arent subscribed
No no, the cancer is a Patreon-exclusive benefit.
Non-Patreons only get lead poisoning and holes in their brain.
How much do I have to pay to get anal fissures?
You have to subscribe to their OnlyFissures.com account, duh.
They got like three men group selling linchables knockoff
WTF is guy who employs pedophiles is so interested in marketing to kids…
This is exactly my take. I don’t understand humanity’s need to blame everyone and everything else for their own problems. Stop blaming tiktok for your dopamine addiction. Get help.
Ah yes what the world needs right now - even more scam peddlers. I for one thank our corporate overlords for deciding for us. A waste of natural resources in scale second only to the data-harvesting-marketing ouroboros
While true let’s not remove the peasants agency here which they are willing exercise to “consoom”
Just the thumbnail of greasy slobs shoveling trash into their mouths is pissing me off.
I honestly don’t get it, but my SO is all over that nonsense. I honestly don’t know why I’d ever want to watch someone else eat.
What does your SO say about it? My SO is into TikTok and sometimes I see her watching odd stuff too. She can’t/hasn’t tried to really articulate why.
They’re just really into food. We watched a Korean cooking competition last night (Culinary Class Wars, basically Michelin star chefs vs other well-respected chefs), and it had a lot of that “watch other people eat” bits, but with some actual entertainment (i.e. descriptions of how dishes are prepared). My SO liked the descriptions of the food (mouth feel and whatnot), whereas I was more interested in the ingredients and cooking process.
I don’t really understand it (food isn’t particularly important to me), and they probably don’t understand my weird fascination with other things (e.g. watching personal finance videos that I strongly disagree with), so I guess we just accept that we’re into different things.
Wasn’t tiktok getting banned? Is that still happening?
I hope not, it’s algorithm seems fun.
Can you imagine a world without influencers?
Millions? One is reminded of the pyramid scheme “problem” where it basically ends up as everybody can’t actually be a salesman if the business is actually going to be viable. Right? Like who are you selling to if everyone else is in on it too?
Sinophobic propaganda doesn’t need to be real. It’s probably more effective when it’s not.
TikTok also wants to turn millions of teenagers into “pranksters” who are just begging for a beating.
It’s like the shittiest QVC and it’s all over my fyp. I hate it. I’ll see the same person selling the same stupid shirt so many times. There were like a dozen people selling a ghost night light. I caved and bought one because it’s actually adorable and my wife loves that sort of stuff and I never give her spontaneous gifts, but it sags in the outlet lmao. Like it just nearly falls out. There’s a bunch of people selling some tub scrubber too right now. It’s so so annoying. I just wanna see shit posts.
Social media is bad for your brain. There’s plenty of communities on lemmy full of shitposts.
Shitposters are the
bedroombedrock of the internetSocial media is bad for your brain. Social media is full of shit posts.
🙃
Message boards are not social media.
That is definitely not how most people use that word lol, message boards are one of the oldest forms of social media around.
Social media is bad for your brain. There’s plenty of communities on lemmy
If social media is bad for your brain why is lemmy, a social media site, not?
Message boars are not social media.
How did you come to that conclusion?
Because message boards have existed both in physical and online for a god damn millenia before fucking facebook and myspace were a whisper in the balls of the creator’s fathers. I have no fucking idea who any of you clown shoes are and I don’t fucking care either.
Children playing show and tell is more social media than online message boards.

Cool story.

First known to be used in the 1700s.
Because social media is just that: media. They’re platforms for ads and marketing that are more akin to broadcast media with a parasocial interactive twist. Contrast that with social networking which facilitates connections between actual people.
At some point in the last two decades, those distinctions have blurred, often to great shareholder benefit.

That is one way to say a lot while saying nothing at all, and it is weird how many people want to pretend they aren’t using social media while using social media.
What are you doing to make “connections between actual people”? How is that different from anyone else using a different platform?
Lemmy is not social media to you because there is no one using it to advertise, market, or broadcast themselves to the greater population?
Or is it because there is no “media” available on the website?
Or is it just because you say so?
This reads like Facebook propaganda. If they are paying people who gives a fuck.
I couldn’t give less of a poo about influencers making money on TikTok.
My media is inundated with genocidal zionist propaganda completely supported by the state.
What is the difference between Israel and China to make it morally right for you to support one genocidal regime and not the other?
Seems like they don’t care about tiktok at all Idk if I’d call that support. Also, I can’t speak for him here but none of my tax dollars go to the Chinese government while more of my tax dollars go to isreal than local schools. So if hes from a country aiding Isreal like me he has an obligation to say something about it or else be complicit is his labor buying weapons for genocide. Its the same reason US protestors focused on Biden instead of Netenyahu when this stated. We don’t get to vote for or against Bibi, but Biden, we do, or at this point ‘did’

China has more trade ties to the US than Israel does.
I see no calls to stop investing in Chinese companies, or buying Chinese products because of the Genocide happening within their borders.
Also, I can’t speak for him here but none of my tax dollars go to the Chinese government
“With data provided by the Congressional Research Service, Senator Ernst and Open the Books determined more than $490 million from U.S. grants and contracts were paid to organizations in China since 2017 and another $870 million were paid to entities in Russia.”
Seems America just loves supporting Genocidal regimes with tax money, and Americans love pretending it doesn’t end up there.

It is morally okay to support, or completely ignore, countries like China according to you and the person I originally responded to.
Can you elaborate on why that is without making false claims about tax dollars?
Big false equivelency. Tax money going to some unnamed ‘organizations in’ certian countries is incomparable to money and weapons going directly to the government of a country conducting genocide with those weapons. Its honestly funny you’d think giving random unnamed organizations money is the same as arming a military conducting genocide. Also just because you dont see something doesnt mean its not happent, there are tons of laws both US and international being passed to curb forced labor. Articles get posted here all the time when new companies end up on the sanction list. Pretending they don’t doesn’t make your arguement better.
Your claim was “No tax dollars!”.
I proved you wrong immediately.
Justify your support of one genocide and condemnation of the other all you want, but you will be continuing the conversation by yourself.
My claim was my tax dollars dont go to the chinese government, you showed they indeed don’t go to the chinese government. Nice try twisting the premises though, but my original comment is right there, you can chek it any time.
